Like with present tense, the various forms of past tense can be confusing, particularly for those who haven't had many years of exposure to the language to get used to verbs with an irregular simple past tense form. Although the rules that govern the use of perfect, continuous and perfect continuous past tense forms are much the same as those of present tense - and as such can be taught using various strategies - irregular verbs are something to learn through repetition and familiarity with the language.
