I learned about the Engage Study Action (ESA) technique. It makes sense to pique a student's interest initially, followed by a more formal learning/studying of a topic, before finally having the student use what he or she has learned. However, patchwork and boomerang variations of this method appear to be just as efficient and more flexible, depending on the topic. I find that the section's reinforcing of the idea that teachers should refrain from over-correcting students (as it can detract from their ability to understand the material) to be very important.
