There are many different types, or groups, of students that one may encounter as an English language teacher. Even within these specialised groups there may be many different types of learners. For example, there may be students of different ages, cultural backgrounds, knowledge of English, levels of motivation and reasons for studying the language in the same class. It is important to tailor the lessons, and the course as a whole, to the type of learners in the group, and to the individual learner as much as possible. Some activities and styles of teaching a may suit beginners, some may suit children, others may be more appropriate for motivated, adult learners. A good teacher must be flexible, and know their students and their student's needs.
