In this unit I learned the qualities of a good teacher and learner. Often times, a good teacher is also a good learner. Characteristics that describe a good English as a second language teacher include kindness, patience, lively, interesting, knowledgeable, sensitive, understanding, fair, and consistent. A good teacher not only knows the subject well, but also knows how to effectively teach it so that it is understood by others. Teachers can do this in many ways in a learning environment. Teachers can have a more hands on and active approach and can act as a controller by managing the class as the main speaker or as an organizer by giving instructions to groups. Directly speaking to students is not the only way to teach students and teachers can act as prompter to let students produce their own announcers, an assessor to allow students to track their progress, or as an observer to allow more student speaking practice in class. Good learners are receptive to the teachers comments and gives feedback to the teacher when they do not understand something or want clarification. Every student is different and there are many reasons for students to study English such as future job opportunities, travel abroad, or to meet new people. It is important for teachers to understand that there are many different levels and motivations for English learners so they should teach each student appropriately.
