This unit firstly introduces four basic skills in language: receptive skills that include listening and reading and productive skills that include speaking and writing. This section mainly focuses on the receptive skills. Listening and reading can be for a purpose or entertainment or combination of both. Readers and listeners employ a number of specialist skills when reading and listening, which are predictive skills, the ability to gain information through scanning, skimming, detailed readings and deduction from context. However, there are still problems in connection with language contained in the text, the topics and the tasks the students will perform. In order to overcome these problems, the unit mentions a few methods which include pre-teaching vocabulary, careful selection of texts, discussing interesting topics and providing comprehension tasks. In addition, one example is given in the text to explore the skills and phrases used for a typical receptive skills lesson. After completing reading this unit, I understand the importance and difficulties in teaching perceptive skills and gain confidence in performing a successful receptive skills lesson.
