When I was learning ESL course, I was very confused with directed speech and reported speech. I still seldom confused with reported speech since my mother tongue does not have this kind of tense change. One thing I would apply in real life situation is using present perfect tense to past perfect tense. Using past perfect tense made me think one more time before I speak because I have to think of time frame that which situation happened first. It was a good lesson to know the terms that used for different conditional sentences.
