We learned about the different types of ways in which students can be assessed. Placement and diagnostic tests can be used to assess students level of language proficiency prior to starting a course. These allow teachers to know where students are at, how they can organize groups and design appropriate classroom material. Progress tests can be formal or informal and are a good way to determine what knowledge students retain throughout the course. Some institutions have final exams or test and prepare students for external exams by using practice tests modeled after these external tests.
