This unit explains what it means to be an excellent teacher, the roles a teacher may assume throughout the course of a lesson as well as the different levels of English language learners. For example, a good teacher is someone who cares, loves teaching, is lively and entertaining and develops a good rapport and interaction with students, while always being kind, fair and patient. She/he is also someone who has a strong understanding of the subject matter; knows students' weaknesses and gives individual feedback and attention as needed; is able to involve all students in class activities and discussions; and able to correct students without offending them or lowering their motivation levels. As for the various roles of a teacher, they include: Manager, Organizer, Assessor, Prompter, Participant, Tutor, Resource/Facilitator, Model and Observer/Monitor. A good learner is someone who is curious about the subject matter, asks questions and is willing to learn through making mistakes. Learners are divided by both their language level and age. There are four age groups (the first 3 of which are considered to be Young Learners (YLs)): 2-7 years, 8-13 years, 14-18 years and Adult. Each age group has its strengths, while also posing unique challenges. One of the keys to both teacher and student success is for the teacher to have a clear understanding of the age group she/he is teaching as well as the appropriate teaching style to match their age and language acquisition level. Language acquisition levels are divided into six different groups: Starter Group/Breakthrough (1/A1), Elementary/Waystage (2/A2), Pre-Intermediate/Threshold (3/B1), Intermediate/Vantage (4/B2), Upper Intermediate/Effective Operational Efficiency (5/C1), Advanced/Mastery (6/C2). By understanding the level of one's students and the skills that come with said level, a teacher can effectively craft lesson plans that best serve the understanding and progress of the learners.
