This unit focuses on two fo the four major skills that are involved in learning and using a language: reading and listening. These are both considered to be receptive skills, in which people 'receive'/'take in' information. Pre-existing knowledge plays a huge part in how students will interpret what they read or hear. This is something to definitely keep in mind when teaching English to students from a different culture. The skills employed when reading or listening are as follows: predictive skills, scanning (for specific information), skimming (for the general idea), gathering detailed information and deduction from content. When it comes to reading and listening, problems often arise due to word length, sentence length and the number of unfamiliar words in the content at hand. Reading is often easier than listening, though, because the content is 'captured' on paper for the student to revisit as many times as necessary. Some ways a teacher can aid comprehension is to pre-teach the vocabulary; select texts that are appropriate to the age; level and interests of the students; choose topics that are interesting to the students as a whole; create interest through creating discussions, using images and other Engage-type activities; and provide comprehension tasks to help glean how much the students are actually understanding.
