This unit focuses on teaching special groups. Such groups include beginning learners, individual learners, children, business English and multilingual learners. When it comes to beginners there is a quite a large range in skill level. For example, the absolute beginner is someone who has absolutely no English skills at all. However, there are also those students who may have a working knowledge of English conversation, but are lacking in basic literacy skills. These students are also known as "the Beginner without Roman Alphabet." One aspect that is booming within the English teaching industry is one-on-one lessons. These tend to be beneficial because the sessions are completely tailored to each individual's needs and level. Also, when it comes to activities the student tends to pair with the teacher, which may present more of a challenge than if they worked with a fellow classmate. This could potentially lead to greater progress. One of the major drawbacks of these sessions from a teacher's perspective is that they require a lot of the teacher's energy as they do not allow for group activities in the way a traditional classroom setting would. Teaching children can be some of the most fun as it allows the teacher create a lot of fun activities for the students, including art projects in which they label their art using relevant English vocabulary. One of the joys of teaching children is their innate curiosity and their joy for learning. Their minds are like sponges, and therefore can learn much more quickly than an adult learner would. Some tips for succeeding in teaching young learners is to speak slowly, use repetition, play simple games, be willing to make fun of yourself and be silly as well as to act out the meaning of words using props, gestures, and picture cards. On the other hand, business English learners often tend to be tired and over-extended. It is not uncommon for them to work very long hours and then come straight to class. They also may have additional family and work obligations, so it is not to be expected that they have perfect attendance. Absence is simply a normal part of teaching in this area of the industry. An interesting element of teaching business English is that you frequently work with a wide range of ages, usually from 20s to mid-50s or older. For this type of ESL, classes take on one of three forms: one-to-one lessons, in-company groups and in-school groups. The most important thing a teacher can do for their business English clients is to have each individual complete a Needs Analysis so that you (the teacher) can be sure to deliver lessons that meet the needs and experience levels of your students. Ultimately, a teacher can succeed at their work, regardless of the type of group, if he/she assesses the level of his/her students (as well as strengths and weaknesses), learns about their interests and needs and tailors his/her lesson plans accordingly. These combined with enthusiasm and a high-level of organization go a long way.
