This unit focuses on how to teach new language structures to students. The questions above focus heavily on the types of activities that are appropriate for the different stages of an ESA-structured lesson. However, the teacher needs to be mindful when planning a lesson that there are four things students need to do with new language: 1) be exposed to it 2) understand its meaning 3) understand how its constructed 4)be able to practice and produce it. When using a tree as a metaphor for language, grammar is likened to the tree trunk and branches of the language – the stabilizing factors – and vocabulary is likened to the leaves because they have the power to add beauty and variety. What I found most useful in this unit was the suggestion of different frameworks for lesson planning based on the type of lesson. For example, if the lesson is grammar and vocabulary-centered a 'Straight Arrow ESA' approach is best. However, a function-based lesson is best delivered within the framework of a 'Boomerang' or 'Patchwork' ESA, allowing for a significant amount of student talk/practice time.
