There are many teaching methods that influence ESL instruction. These methods include grammar translation, audio lingualism, presentation practice produce, suggestopedia, and the lexical approach. Choosing the most effective method depends on the level of English proficiency and learning styles among the students. It is important that an English lesson include three components: Engage, Study, Activate. The Engage stage of a lesson focuses on warming up the students and does not focus on the practice of a new skill. Appropriate activities for the Engage stage include games, music, or stories. The Study stage of the lesson focuses on practicing new language skills. This stage focuses on grammar, spelling, meaning, and analysis. Appropriate activities include using realia, lists, gap fill activities, or follow on questions. The Activate stage focuses on practice and creative application for language skills. Appropriate activities include role play, communication games, debates, surveys, or producing materials. There are several methods for using these three stages in a lesson such as the Straight Arrow method (ESA), the Boomerang method (EASA), or the Patchwork method (EAASAESA.) Regardless of which strategies an effective English Language Teacher uses, the following are true of how students learn best. First, Students need exposure to the language in order to learn and consistent feedback from the teacher. Second, Communicative teaks offer real world learning, but are not enough alone. Third, students learn best under low levels of anxiety. Finally, students should have opportunities to discover the new language for themselves.
