There are two productive skills that should be developed in ESL classroom: speaking and writing. They are both important. However, many teachers pay less attention to writing as it takes long and they tend to leave writing tasks for homework. Teaching writing includes spelling, punctuation and using proper grammar. Writing demands more concentration and a more accurate output as it's impossible to correct mistakes 'on the spot' like in speaking. Speaking, on the other hand, might demand less accuracy and more fluency.
