The first part of this unit covered various qualities of good teachers, as well as the roles these teachers might fulfill with respect to learners. According to the unit, a good teacher should be a kind and patient person who cares about students and their learning. The teacher should also love teaching and have a good knowledge of his or her subject, so as to be a proper model of pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary for students. Teachers should also be able to engage all students equally, while being able to pinpoint and address individual student weaknesses and difficulties. The teacher should correct these student weaknesses in a tactful way, so as not to discourage their students from continuing their efforts at learning the English language. The second part of the unit deals with various student qualities, as well as specifics with regard to the age of the student and level of English proficiency. The qualities of a good learner include a desire to learn, listen to and experiment with the language. The learner should also be willing to ask questions and accept error correction from the teacher in order to further English learning. With regard to the age of the students, the unit states that their age might affect motivation for learning the language as well as the process by which they learn. While adult students might freely choose to learn English, some adolescent or pre-adolescent learners may be forced to take English classes and might be more inhibited in their participation. Also, while very young learners will acquire English naturally since they are still learning their native language, older learners will be more likely to process concepts in their native language and then translate them into English. As far as English proficiency levels are concerned, the unit lists 6 levels from Beginner to Advanced, stating what skills students at each level should display. Thus, the good teacher should be guided in his or her teaching according to the English level which the students have acquired.
