In Unit 16 on Conditionals and Reptorted speech, I learned that there are five different types of conditionals, zero, first, second, third and mixed. Conditional tenses are used to speculate about what could happen, what might have happened, and what we wish would happen. In English, most sentences using the conditional contain the word if. Many conditional forms in English are used in sentences that include verbs in one of the past tenses. Then I learned the difference of direct and reported speech. For example, direct speech repeats, or quotes, the exact words spoken. When we use direct speech in writing, we place the words spoken between quotation marks (" ") and there is no change in these words. Lastly, in reported speech the tenses, word-order and pronouns may be different from the original sentence. When we report someone’s words we can do it in two ways. We can use direct speech with quotation marks (“I work in a bank”), or we can use reported speech (He said he worked in a bank.)
