Course books are a very emotive issue for many teachers, some love them, some hate them. In the real world, you don't always have the books and materials that you need. We often have to create our own materials to either supplement the course book, or replace some sections that are not suitable for the class. For many students, compared to the course book, materials created by the teacher are more interesting, more relevant. Materials can be divided into two groups: authentic materials and created materials. Because authentic materials are not designed for students, they are not graded for level, so should be selected carefully. Created materials, on the other hand, can be graded to the level of the students. Crosswords, puzzles, role-play cards, flashcards, picture stories, gap fill activities... can be used for a class. Course books have their advantages and disadvantages. One should make the best use of course books by noticing a few things. Four different options for course book use are omit, replace, supplement and adapt. The teacher should analyze and consider a few factors before choosing a course book for a particular class.
