This unit deals with conditionals and the reported speeh.there are five types of conditionals,which are the zero conditional,the first conditional , the second conditional,the third conditonal and the mixed conditional.the zero conditional(if/when + present simple,present simple) is refers to actions and facts that are irrefutable, the first conditional(if + present simple , will) talks about real situations in the future that is possible or even certain once the condition has been satisfied. the second conditional (if + past simple , would/could/might , base form) communicates a present or future unreal hypothetical situation that is presently not true and unlikely to be true.the third conditional(if + past perfect would/could/might + have + past participle) refers to a hypothetical past action (or non action) and its hypothetical past consequence or result.the mixed conditional (if + past perfect,would + base form) refers to hypothetical past actions or state and the hypothetical present consequence.Concerning the the reported speech and the direct speech , it is worth noting here that when reporting a speech,the tense of the verb used in the direct speech changes.the present simple changes into the past simple, the past simple changes int the past perfect .however the past perfect and the past perfect continuous remain the same.
