When talking in the past tense there are form tenses. The most common is the Past simple where the verb is changed by adding 'ed'. (Subject + verb + ed in the past tense). It's used to express completed actions that occurred at a definite time. Next is the Past continuous which is used when an action began, occurred, and finished at a particular point time in the past. For an affirmative sentence the structure is (subject + aux verb (was/were + verb+ing); swap the subject and aux verb when asking a question. Another tense is the Past perfect and it's used to refer to a past action and a related past action before that. The auxiliary verb in Past perfect is always had no matter the subject, and the main ver is conjugated to the past participle form by adding ed. It's used when there is a longer continuity of the past action and happened for a period of time and it doesn't give any indication of whether was completed. The Past perfect continues happens in the past, refers to two past actions, focusing on the fact that one had been continuing at one point in the past. There is always two auxiliary verbs in this tense, had + been. So it's important to focus on the stucture of the sentence. One example would be if it lacks the auxiliary verb 'to have' in can not be a perfect tense sentence. Another one is if it lacks the present participle used as the main verb in the sentence it can not be a continuous tense sentences. And just like other tenses there are irregular verbs and these have to just be learned individually since there is not set rule.
