7 most common future tenses
subject+ shall/will+ verb: I will pick you up at eight
subject+ shall/will+not+verb: I will not pick you up at eight
Question: Shall I pick you up at eight?
Negative question: Shall I not/will I not … ?
Contractions: I’ll/ you’ll etc.
Future facts and certainties: He will be 40 on July.
Promises: You will get the car.
Predictions: It is cloudy. It will rain soon.
Assumptions/speculations:The will have to sell their house, I expect.
Spontaneous decisions: I’ll get my coat.
Threats: You’d better go or I’ll hit you.
Teaching ideas: Fortune telling/ palm reading, with present simple in time clauses, going on a holiday or lost in the desert-what will you take?, winning the lottery, what will you do?, predicting future changes, predicting what others will be like in the future, songs.
Form: Subject will+be+verb+ing
Affirmative: I will be waiting for you
Yes No question: Will you be waiting for me?
Negative: I will not be waiting.
To say that something will be in progress at a particular moment in the future: This time tomorrow, I will be lying on the beach.
To predict the present: John will be having lunch now.
For polite equerries: Will you be coming to the party.
To refer to future events which are fixed or decided:a Professor Johnson will be giving another lecture on the same topic next week at the same time.
Teaching ideas: arranging diaries/dates, trying to get out of the date from hell, illustrative situations.
3. Future perfect
Form: Subject+will+have+past participle.
Affirmative: I will have finished the assignment by Monday.
Yes No question: Will you have finished the assignment by Monday?
Negative: I will not have finished by Monday.
Usage: to say that something will have been done, completed or achieve at a certain time in the future.
Teaching ideas: fill in future diaries and elicit questions in the future perfect, invention of an extremely successful future career, choose a famous historical personage and note down important dates in his/her life.
4.Future perfect continuous
Affirmative: I will have been working for seven years.
Yes No question: Will you have been working for seven years?
Negative: I will not have been working for two years.
To say: How long something will have continued by a certain time: By the time you get here, I will have been working for two hours.
Teaching idea:How long will you have been learning English/ going to school/living in your present house etc.
5. Be going + infinitive
Form: form to be in the present+going to+ base form of the verb.
Affirmative: I am going to play football next week.
Yes No question: Are You going to play football next week?
Negative: I am not going to play football next week.
Intentions: I am not going to do it.
Predictions based on present evidence: It is cloudy. I think it is going to rain.
Plans/decisions made before the time of speaking: I am going to visit my family in June.
Teaching ideas: making holiday/birthday party plans, going to game, Itinerary from a courier, making predictions based on evidence.
6.The present simple
Form: see present simple.
Usages: To suggest a more formal situation, timetables and schedules, to suggest a more impersonal tone.
Teaching ideas: Compiling or sharing information from airport or railway schedules, discussing weekly timetables.
7. The present continuous
Form: see present tenses.
Usages: Definite arrangements, decisions and plans without a time frame.
Teaching ideas: diaries/schedules, role-play.
