Materials and Coursework should be something on a teacher's mind when preparing for classes. Two types of material are authentic (magazines, newspapers, articles) and created (word searches, flashcards). Authentic material helps students gain confidence in real-life situations, and it is typically more interesting because it tends to be up-to-date. Created material can be molded to a certain level, which may be harder with authentic material, so it's important to choose wisely. Coursebooks usually include student work, workbooks, teacher books, and ancillary material such as a dictionary, video, or flashcards. The advantages of these include less time wasted, a balance of grammar/vocabulary/skills work, confidence of previous usage, and the ability for students and teachers to have a reference. Disadvantages include out-of-date material, the instance that students find it unappealing and too general of material, and teachers may solely rely on this to teach, stifling creativity. Some advice is to delegate certain slots per class to coursework, and use a critical approach to the material; Coursebooks are not the teacher's Bible. Teachers have options to omit, replace, supplement, and adapt material to the needs of his/her students. Ask these questions to analyze a book- It is a fair price? Is it very available? Does it have an attractive design? Does it include a mix of skills? Is it an appropriate level? Is it relevant? Does it have a good teacher guide? Are there useful ancillary materials?
