This unit was on the productive skills of speaking and writing. When people are communicating they are typically doing it because they have a communicative purpose, they want to say something, they want to listen to something, or they are interested in what is being said. Previously in one of the other units I was curious about the difference was between accuracy and frequency, and this unit explains that accuracy is during the study phase and is concentrated on producing the correct language, whereas fluency is in the activate stage and is concerned with students experimenting with language. When it comes to speaking in the classroom there are three categories that activities fall into, controlled activities where language is controlled by the teacher, guided activities where there is a little more creativity but the output is still controlled by the teacher even though the exact language isn't, and creative communication where the scenario is created by the teacher but the content o language isn't. Similar to one of the previous units, this unit also touched base on some of the reasons students are reluctant to speak; lack of confidence, fear of making mistakes, peer intimidation etc. When it comes to writing, teachers want to focus on handwriting, spelling, layout and punctuation. Creative writing seems like it is similar to fluency where you want the students to be more creative, and practice what they have learned without worrying too much about the accuracy. The last topic in this unit was about games, and how games can help promote learning in the classroom by using competitive games where students try to reach a goal first, or co-operative games where students work together toward a common goal. These games can be communicative and linguistic or have a non-linguistic goal or aim.
