Pronunciation may be difficult for teachers to teach a class, and is one of the most sought-after aspects of mastering a language. Intonation describes the pitch and variation of whole sentences, which is important in indicating sentences of inquiry, (dis)agreement, and emotions. The patterns are falling and fall/rise, and flat (indicating a lack of interest or a command). A teacher can use nonsense words to have students portray certain emotions, or use gesture, write or draw it out, or through humming/singing. Two general rules are that one word can only have one stress, and one stresses syllables only. There are more stressed words than unstressed in the English language. Teachers can teach through gesture, choral repetitions, and using the board to portray the message. Sounds can be joined by linking (as in Marble Arch), dropping letters (as in Bond Street), sound changing (as in Green Park), and extra lettering (as in Tears in my Eyes). Articulation is also a very important part of speech, in which one uses different part of the vocal tract to present specific sounds or specific letters. This includes palatal, alveolar, dental, palatal-alveolar, labio-dental, bilabial, and glottal. On top of this, there are different articulation manners, including plosive (explosive), fricative (with friction), nasal (with the nose), lateral, affricate (combining plosive and fricative), and approximant. Teaching techniques include dictation, emphasizing speech, visual aids, phonemes, and tongue twisters.
