This unit emphasized that a great part of a teacher's function comes in the form of relationship management. The teacher has to understand the learner's need(s), abilities, motivation, etc. Mismanagement of this relationship can be devastating- a decrease in learners' motivation, formation of the seed for lackluster/disruptive lessons, or even learners losing hope altogether for learning foreign languages.
The teacher being the authority figure in the classroom has to be fully aware of his/her many roles and be willing and able to adapt as scenarios play out in the classroom. Though teaching styles may vary and teachers may be more familiar and/or comfortable sticking to limited roles, stretching the teaching experience also stretches the learner's and learning experience.
In conclusion, the unit for me was really one where roles where clearly defined and then showing how the two entities should intersect in a successful classroom environment. I also appreciated the distinctive features of adult versus kids, as language learners. Overall, an interesting mix of information.
