I didn't know there was so many articulate pieces to the English language. I had heard of the various phonetic alphabet pieces before, but I never thought of what use they could have. The phonetic alphabet help alleviate some of the issues that come with words like read/read, lead/lead/led, etc. I do know from Chinese courses that there is an early focus on just being able to get the sounds of words right and that phonetic chart is quite a different from the English one, but the relevance of it still holds true. The use of the literal machinery of vocal cords to make sounds helps to explain various aspects of English that is far from apparent. Lastly intonation is something that comes naturally in English that without noticing them it is difficult to teach. Now that I know that intonation can be a conscious process it will help me where I feel I may not have been able to clarify myself as well as I should have.
