Detailed information: reading to understand everything in detail. Deduction from content: reading to deduce the meaning of individual words and phrases. Problems with listening and reading: Ways of approaching language difficulty: Pre-teaching vocabulary. Careful selection of texts. An outline of a typical receptive skills lesson (patchwork) Engage: questions about the topic and allowing the students to read/listen and then checking if the text answers their questions. Study: Pre Teach potentially problematic vocabulary. Engage: Eliciting information from students. Study: Students read the text and then answer comprehension tasks. Activate: Remove the text from view and students write a brief review on the topic. Then in pairs students compare and feedback to the class. Study: Dealing with any language problems during review. Activate: In pairs, students write a brief paragraph on a similar topic.
