The future tense in the english language is the most complex of them all, since there are many meanings and messages that are possible, with various scenarios available. The future simple uses subject and 'will' to portray many different ideas (promises, certainties, threats). 'Shall' can be used, which is more common in the UK. Teaching can include fortune telling and packing plans for a trip. Future continuous uses subject plus "will be" (verb)ing. It's used for predicting the present, or predicting a present action in a future time. Teaching can include asking students to make plans with others, or creating illustrative scenarios and making predictions. The future perfect tense uses "will have" plus the past participle ("In April, I will have had 4 surgeries"). This tense uses an adverbial expression to signal when the event will be completed. Teachers can have students fill in diaries or describe their dream career accomplishments in future age increments. The future perfect continuous uses "will have been" (verb)ing. So, by a certain time in the future, an action will be continuously occurring. Teachers can use pair work to ask how long a student has been doing their favorite hobby by the end of classes. Be going plus infinitive tense describes intentions, predictions (based on present evidence), and plans ("I am going to be a star"). There may be confusion between future simple, which may be taught during the same lesson. Teaching can include making birthday plans, or listening to songs with this tense. Finally, present simple and present continuous can be used to describe future suggestions, schedules ("The train leaves at 6pm"), definite arrangements, and decisions without a time frame ("I'm leaving you")
