There are many different types of groups which may take an English class. Beginners can be divided into true beginners with no prior knowledge of English and false beginners who have studied or been exposed to English before but don't remember much. It is also helpful to distinguish between adult learners who are generally more motivated to work and study than children, but often have a harder time absorbing and reproducing the information. It's also a more difficult process to teach learners from countries which don't use the roman alphabet; more time should be spent on letters and pronunciation. Teaching children can be fun and rewarding. They have shorter attention spans so activities should be varied and short. a number of discipline problems can arise with kids and some ways of dealing with them include changing the seating plan, giving attention seekers extra attention, making sure to treat all students equally, and being consistent with your expectations of the students and yourself. Teaching Business English often means working within companies and having many different levels of English in one class. Student needs and uses of English should be assessed at the beginning of the course and wherever possible the class should be targeted to the specific requirements of as many students as possible. One on one classes can be nice because they allow teachers to focus specifically on the needs and interest of one person. They are often conversation oriented and the teacher has to act as a activity participant much more than in classes with multiple students. Teaching classes with learners from many different languages can be awesome because the students are forced to speak in English in order to communicate. When teaching a group of students who speak the same L1 the challenge is to keep the students from reverting to their own language during activities. A little bit of L1 is ok, especially when the students are explaining the activity to each other.
