This unit explains the English phonology and pronunciation, and teaching techniques for intonation, word stress and articulation. Intonation reflects the tone (rising, falling, flat etc.) within a sentence and can indicate whether the speaker has finished his story, or will continue (rising tone at the end of the sentence). The rising intonation can also mean that the speaker is expecting a response. Stress refers to a word or a syllable. A speaker can move focus on any information in the sentence by stressing a word or phrase. Normally, articles and prepositions are not stressed. Articulation depends on the speech organs movements and location while making sounds. As much as teaching phonetics and phonology to students may be difficult, it is important part of teaching EFL. Using example techniques from this unit can help to implement them into lessons.
