Unit 5 went over the subject of managing the class room. When it comes to managing the classroom, it is important that the teacher establishes a dominant position in the classroom, while also making sure respect is shared mutually between students too. The best ways for a teacher to use their position to get the attention of the students is to utilize eye contact, gestures, and their voice. When arranging the classroom, it is good to have the weaker students next to stronger students. The ideal seating arrangement is circles and horseshoes, because it is good for grouping and the allows for a more intimate classroom, but it does not work for large size classes. The circles and horseshoes seating arrangement is the middle ground between orderly-rowed seating, which is traditional and separate tables which is bad for volume control. It is important to have a balance between teacher and student talk time. Teacher talk time is good for input, giving instructions, and establishing rapport with the students, but it could be a problem when it presented in a way that is not simple. If anything teacher talk time should encourage more student talk time. Keeping discipline and being able to manage and prevent certain behavior in the classroom, is important. Situation that arise are sometimes not preventable or outside factors, and it is important once problems arise that they are addressed quickly. Establishing a rapport with the students allows openness in the classroom, and the feel that each student is supported by the teacher.
