The two receptive skills are reading and listening. Reading is often less intimidating for language learners since the words remain in front of them in written form and can be reread many times. Listening, on the other hand, doesn’t give learners much time to process or chance to read the material for themselves again. Pre-teaching necessary vocabulary helps students get more from a receptive skills lesson. Students need to develop the skill and confidence to engage with both authentic and non-authentic materials without needing to understand every detail. Teachers should choose materials wisely so that it caters to the interests of all students in the class and is not too difficult that it is discouraging nor too basic.
