In this chapter I learned that course materials are divided into two categories, authentic materials and created material. Authentic materials are reading or listening to language a local person would come into contact to such as a magazine or newspaper article. Authentic materials tend to be more interesting and tend to build student confidence however, they cannot be scaled to the classes’ language level; making them not apt for beginner students. Created materials, on the other hand are course materials created by a teacher with the classes’ language level in mind. The examples given in this chapter are crosswords, word searches and role play cards. I then learned what I should look for in choosing a class book: price,availability,methodology etc.
