I spent the second year of University studying abroad last year. I did Fall semester in Argentina and Spring semester in Spain.
I had to teach a class of high school students in Spain when I did not feel qualified to do so. It was with a volunteer organization, and I specifically said I wanted to assist in a class, not teach solo. I recognized many things from this unit. I had a class of very different language levels. I was able to assess their levels but didn't know how to accommodate them.
I also assisted in a classroom in Argentina where they were younger and very much more open to learning, although the teacher did do 90% of the talking and reading from the book. I instinctively knew that was not an effective way to teach, when it was done continually.
The other classes I assisted at in Argentina were adult classes held at the University. Those students were a pleasure, they wanted to be there, they were interested in learning to improve their English. They were as receptive to the learning games as the young learners. I was able to see the differences in the learning with all these groups, so the unit provided a bit of insight into those classes I attended.
