This unit focused on modals, phrasal verbs and the passive voice. Modals are used in sentences before the main verbs in order to add meaning to the sentence. Some ideas that can be added are that of request, obligation, possibility, ability or advice. The meaning of the sentence depends on which modal is used before the main verb. Relative clauses are dependent clauses that gives information about a noun. These are introduced by a relative pronoun. The two types of relative clauses are the defining relative clause, which is an essential part of the meaning of the sentence and does not use commas, and the non-defining clause, which is not essential to the meaning of the sentence and is separated by commas. Phrasal verbs consist of verbs plus one or two particles. The three types of basic verbs are the type 1 - Intransitive that cannot be followed by a direct object; type 2 - transitive separable is where an object pronoun can only come between the verb and the particle; type 3 - transitive separable is where the object phrase or pronoun come after the particle. Finally, we have the passive voice. The passive voice is used when the doer of the action is not the focus of the sentence, is not known or when we don't want to say who the doer is.
