This unit explains about the past simple, past continuous, past perfect and the past perfect continuous tense and how many similarities exist with the present tense. I have learned in the past simple that "was" and "were" are the only ones used for the verb to be in this tense. Also something that I learned is that when I see the word "ago" I can immediately note that a past simple sentence is in front of me.
