This unit is about evaluating students. There are different times and ways in which school administrators and teachers will want to evaluate students. One way that teachers can evaluate students is through "tutorials", or that is, taking the time to talk to individuals and small groups on an ongoing basis regarding how their language is progressing, if they are keeping up with the class, and so on. Students can also be guided through self- and class- evaluations by the teacher via a questionnaire or discussion. Finally, there are tests. There are several types of tests; diagnostic tests, which assess language level coming into the course, and placement tests, which put students into the right level of course. Placement tests can also be used before new units to help the teacher plan based on what students already know/need work on. Then there are progress tests (that can also take the form of activities and games) to assess progress over the course. Finally, there are achievement tests, often taking the form of internal or external examinations, which test knowledge gained and retained, provide students with a goal to work towards, and in the case of external exams, may provide some kind of qualification for students.
