In topics covered in Unit 1, consisted of what makes a "good teacher" and a "good learner" in a new age of learning language, which is more "student-centered" then "teacher-centered." A good teacher should have certain qualities about themselves, as well as play various roles in the classroom. A teacher must love teaching, while being kind, patient, motivating, lively and helpful. These qualities will ensure the teacher can be successful at portraying different roles in classroom, such as an organizer, assessor, prompter, and participant. In order for one to claim they are a good teacher, their classroom must consist of good learners, which are students who are willing to listen to the language, and desire to experiment with it. A good learner wants to ask questions, thinks about their own learning process, and simply desires to learn. A key factor in how one learns is their age, and there are differences between adult and young learners. Adult learners are more experienced in learning, choose to go school, and are self-motivated, while younger learners are more outspoken although they lack language awareness and have short attention spans. There are certain levels of learning languages that range from beginner to advanced. It is also important to take note, that there are various reasons why one wants to learn a language as well. I believe a good teacher, should be a good learner too. In a classroom that is more student-centered, a good teacher should, while still maintaining authority and control, embrace each student, as well as empower them with the tools to succeed. A good teacher should get to know their students on a personal level, so they can help them reach their goals.
