As native speakers, there are many parts to grammar that we use in everyday communication without thinking much about them or even being able to explain the rules or purposes behind them. Active and passive voice, modal verbs, and phrasal verbs are all excellent examples of this. Those who are teaching English though need to be aware of these parts of grammar as they can often cause confusion for students in understanding how and why they are used. It is important for an effective teacher therefore to be able to not only use these parts of grammar correctly but to also be able to explain the rules, structure, and meanings these sentences and types of verbs is that their students can both understand them in reading and conversation and to use in their own speaking and writing.
