This unit provided a base knowledge for the parts of speech. While this information may seem unnecessary at times to native English speakers, it is extremely helpful for language learners. By understanding the “why” behind sentence structure and word choice, students will be able to become more independent in their use of language by being able to use basic rules to construct their own sentences correctly without simply memorizing specific sentences from a book or teacher. In order to provide students with these necessary grammatical tools, it is critical that teachers understand the parts of speech and rules that govern them.
