The four basic language skills of reading, listening, speaking, and writing are all equally important. Therefore, they should each be present in every lesson as much as possible. This does not mean however that they must be given equal amounts of time in every lesson. There are times when one or two specific skills will need to be addressed in a more focused manner.
The receptive skills of reading and listening require the teacher to carefully select texts that best meet their students needs by choosing topics that are interesting and a good level for the student. These texts should include a variety of genres and both authentic and non-authentic examples to provide challenge as well as opportunities to build confidence in students.
