This unit examined the various tenses that we use to describe the past. This is important because without even knowing it, we describe the past from various perspectives, relative to certain points in the past. Sentence structure dictates whether a past event has come to an end, whether it was already happening before a certain event, etc. It is important to understand these finer points so as to be able to instruct a student how English speakers describe the past, since the student's structure of describing the past will likely differ from English.
