This section covers how to evaluate and test students for various purposes through out their studies. There are three main types of evaluation: Tutorials, evaluation by the students and, of course, different kinds of tests. Tutorials can be done both with the whole class or with individual student at the end of a class or week, to review and discuss the work and lessons that have been done. They can help to identify students’ problems and assess their performance. Evaluations by students are usually done to evaluate the course, and it promotes genuine interaction, helping the students develop a greater awareness of what’s happening in the classroom. The third, and probably what most people think about when they think of “evaluation,” is tests. There are five different types of tests that cater to different needs. Placement tests or diagnostic tests are usually taken at the beginning of a course and are designed to help identify students’ English level and put them in appropriate classes. Diagnostic tests are similar but are more extensive. These tests start out simple and get progressively more difficult depending on how comfortable the student is with the questions. Progress tests are given to students throughout the course to periodically gauge what the students have remembered or forgotten. They typically include a balance of all four skills and are often required by the school or even the parents. Practice tests are often given as a revision and typically follow the format and structure of the examination the students are preparing for. Those examinations, often external, are the last kind of test. There are various forms of proficiency tests. The general English assessment often uses the Cambridge Assessment tests, which include five levels of tests for elementary to advanced students. The advanced tests are often above even the ESL teachers’ level and may require a lot of preparation to teach. There are also proficiency tests for the business English world. Probably the most well-known test would be the TOEIC test, which tests all four skills, and is typically need for employment or entering university. The Business English Certificate (BET) and the Business Level Testing Service (BULATS) are some other business English proficiency tests. Finally, there are some proficiency tests aimed at academic English. Two popular tests are the TOEFL and IELTS. TOEFL can be done via computer or paper test and is taken in over 90 countries. Students get an accumulative score, rather than a pass or fail mark. IELTS, like other tests, evaluates all four skills and is often needed in jobs or universities. IELTS is a bit unique as when taking the writing and reading portion of the exam, students may choose between an academic style exam or a more general style of exam.
