Testing is a difficult subject for teachers and students. It can be hard to determine whether a test only assesses a student's memory or his or her true language ability. I also think passing an external exam is a good motivator for improving English. However I think the English that is most useful and rewarding in life cannot be tested for, it is the everyday fluency of the language that native speakers take for granted but foreign language learners desperately wish to attain.
