As a preschool English teacher, the use of coursebooks is not an option, however, I have learnt, the hard way that not all schools will provide you with the necessary materials.
So I have had to buy or make my own, if I were to teach older students, a coursebook would be used as a reinforcement but not as a first option.
Why? because it is very boring for the students, I think if we spent more time thinking about what the students want, different activities based around the subject and then after getting them to interact and participate with one another, then sit down with the course book they might understand the lesson better and even enjoy it.
