This unit explained how to approach teaching students the receptive skills of listening and reading. It also examined the challenges that many students come across when learning these receptive skills in a second language. Predictive skills, scanning, skimming, understanding detailed information, and deducing from context are all ways that people read and listen. When teaching these receptive skills, it is beneficial to choose a topic that your students are interested in and also to pre-teach some essential vocabulary at the start of the lesson.
