This unit informs us of the four basic skills in language; reading, writing, listening and speaking before going into further depth about the two receptive skills among these. The unit teaches the different tools people use when reading, such as skimming, and scanning for information and explains that it is important to use topics of interest to the students in the class to gain more attention/ participation. I have learnt that reading is not simply reading- that you also need to have pre-existent knowledge of the topic/ situation to assist in you understanding of the words you have just read. This is important to remember I believe as it will ensure I teach in a way that expresses meaning to the students rather than just word memorisation to produce sentences they don’t really understand.
