This unit talks about the different roles of teachers, different kinds of learners, language ability levels and various motivation for learning English. I learned that there are many roles of a teacher such as a monitor, a prompter, a model, etc. One must be a little bit of all of them to be a well-rounded, effective teacher. As teachers we must identify students’ individual abilities, motivation levels, attention span and take into consideration how they learn best. All this can depend on factors externally such as culture and life experience, or factors in the classroom, such as their language awareness and nervousness. Knowing a student’s motivation for learning English is important for continually encouraging students to take responsibility for learning the language. When it comes to the group of students that one might be teaching, there are going to be different challenge when working with adults and young learners. I think that although young learners have a lack of experience in life, and may have more behavior problems, there may be more difficulty in teaching adults for some. Adult students may not be open to your ways of teaching the class and may be unmotivated in class to ask questions or communicate orally in class. Teachers must be up to this challenge in order to have a successful class. Assessing and identifying a student’s language level, and understanding how that can affect the learner, will be essential to helping one’s students learn further.
