Whenever there is a new student a placement test should always be given to properly place the student at their English level. Progress testing should be done periodically throughout the year to see what the student have remembered and retained. Diagnostic tests are given at the beginning of each course and are similar to a placement test but are used to help the teacher prepare lessons for the students. Practice tests are usually used for external exams and help students practice the information. There are a few general external tests ie. TOEFL - test of English as a foreign language and TOEIC - test of English for International Communication. TOEIC is the most widely recognized test of work-place English proficiency.
