This unit gave me a clearer insight of teachers-learners relationship. It inspired me to do my own research on the matter by discussing with my colleagues and reading some other supplementary materials. It also promoted me to assess my own performance in my lessons and to be more aware of my students reactions. I share the believe that lessons should be more student-orientated and that teachers should maximize students active role in the class. By understanding the roles and responsibilities of both my students and myself, I can develop a more effective and engaging learning environment. It also covered some of the basics regarding student progress assessment and grading. Although the language ability parameters may vary from a country to another there are already standards that can help teachers to organize and manage their classes better. This is very important, especially when it comes to assessing a new student that wishes to join in a language class. Being able to provide useful academic advise and to help them find the proper course will definitely get them started on the right path. Understanding the different language ability levels will also help the teacher to prepare lesson plans tailored to the students’ requirements. In addition to this, this unit also made me reflect on the different motivations to learn the English language. Whether they strive to get better employment opportunities or just want to be able to meet people from different nationalities, knowing my students, and what pushes them forward is also a powerful tool that will help me connect with them and be better prepare to meet their needs.
