What I have learned in this unit 13, Teaching pronunciation and phonology. Pronunciation is probably the most ignored aspect of English language teaching. Because native English speaker even find it difficult to hear certain features such as the fall or raise of speech, specially at the end of sentences, however an effective teacher consider the teaching of pronunciation an integral part of the course. Skilled pronunciation teaching also gives life to a class because it reflex feelings and personal reactions to difference situations. However it is possible to lay down general guidelines for English pronunciation. Once the basic concepts has been grasped the dedicated reader can extent their own personal knowledge by further reading and with classroom practice.
The terms phonetics and phonology are often used interchangeably, although the term phonology is increasingly used to indicate the whole sound system of a particular language, as well as concentrating on the International Phonetic Alphabet and its use in helping students to come to an understanding of the pronunciation of English.
In the classroom there should be time given to pronunciation, stress and intonation practice so as to make students aware of importance of accuracy and clarity of communication. Intonation carries the message in a sentence. It is particularly important in questioning, agreeing or disagreeing, or confirming statements. It is also fundamental in the expression of emotions or feelings, for example sadness, happiness, disbelief, etc.
