Unit Five covers the basics of managing a classroom. The text introduces the different types of groups for activities a teacher can choose, such as, individual or class. The reading also covers the advantages and disadvantages to these group choices. For example, with an individual group, the teacher has more time to check in with students one on one and there is less pressure than speaking in front of the class, however, there is less student talk time. Whereas, with a class activity the teacher can watch the whole class, but certain students may not be inclined to speak. This section also covers the different classroom set ups and the atmosphere they create. The horseshoe or circle set up allows for more intimacy and easy paired group work, while the individual table set up works well for group activities but makes it hard for the teacher to guarantee the attention of all students. The seating, the text states, all depends on class size, seating available, and teacher observation into things, like, how students get along. The chapter also covers the advantages to gaining rapport with students by being invested in them, tailoring lessons to their interest, and following the rules they must, such as, being on time.
